What Is the Most Effective Toothbrushing Routine?

The Internet is full of well-intentioned advice, but a good portion is either obsolete or just plain wrong. That's exactly why we asked dental hygienist Adéla Kvitová how to clean your teeth properly. And from the absolute basics.
What Is the Most Effective Toothbrushing Routine?

No teeth-brushing routine can be truly effective without the correct toothbrush. “Always choose softer toothbrushes. Harder toothbrushes can clean your teeth a little faster, but you’re running the risk of soft tissue damage and potential gingivitis,” explains dental hygienist Adéla Kvitová. “Only a softer toothbrush can effectively remove the dental plaque accumulated around the neck of the tooth.” MEDIBLANC 2990 Soft toothbrushes are the starting point for people who are used to harder toothbrushes.

Speaking of time, the recommended amount for brushing teeth can also differ from article to article. “The most commonly stated 2-3 mins are more or less sufficient, but only with the correct technique,” cautions Adéla Kvitová. “In my experience, we often forget that teeth have two sides–one facing the tongue and one facing the cheeks–and we need to care for both equally. So, if you divide your teeth into four quadrants as commonly advised and brush each for about 30 s on both sides, you get 4 min, which is what I recommend.”

But if you want to learn the correct oral care, you won’t make it with a classic toothbrush only. You’ll need to go interdental. “Usually, people are trying to avoid brushing interdental spaces as they see it as a chore, but that’s a mistake,” says Adéla Kvitová. “From my experience, it’s the biggest mistake people make when brushing teeth.” However, it can be entirely avoided with the MEDIBLANC Interdental Brush and its angled version, ideal for comfortable cleaning of interdental spaces between molars.

Another important step is selecting the correct toothpaste. It’s generally best to avoid aggressive toothpastes with harsh chemicals and added sugars as they can do more harm than good. The ideal toothpaste should not only clean your teeth but also alleviate other issues such as sensitive teeth, discoloration, or bad breath. MEDIBLANC Whitening toothpaste line is suitable for all toothbrush types, doesn't contain coarse abrasives, peroxide, SLS/SLES, synthetic sweeteners, or parabens. The formula is based on hydroxyapatite, a 100% natural mineral that speeds up teeth remineralization.

The next step is usually additive care in the form of mouthwash. A good mouthwash should complement the effects of toothpaste, but it should never replace it. “Patients often neglect their toothbrushing technique in favor of a mouthwash thinking it will get rid of bacteria for them, which is a dangerous misconception,” warns Adéla Kvitová. “Also be mindful of their alcohol content as it can dehydrate your mouth and lead to a higher risk of cavities.” A good option is MEDIBLANC Anti-plaque Mouthwash which helps remove dental plaque without alcohol.

However, having the correct tools and quality products won’t automatically make your toothbrushing routine effective. “You need to focus on brushing your teeth. People usually rush through it, which leads to insufficient dental plaque removal, interdental spaces neglect, and incorrect mouthwash use,” concludes Adéla Kvitová.

So, if you want to brush your teeth effectively, you need to take your time to do it thoroughly. Remember, there are no shortcuts to healthy teeth.
